New cartridge BB cup/spindle tightness?

I've had trouble with plastic non-drive side cups so got hold of an alloy one to go with a new UN26 BB. The BB and cup went in fine but if I tighten the non-drive cup until it's tight then the BB spindle becomes slightly stiff. If I loosen the cup a fraction the BB spindle spins freely.

What's the correct way to have it?

Not sure how this is happening. The non drive cup supports the cartridge body - that is all.

    Torque to required measurement.

get the driveside side of the BB shell faced.

if it is way out it can put the BB off centre and then when you add the non drive side cup it misaligns every thing.

you may as well get the BB fully faced and chased.

That's what I thought supersonic but it's definitely happening - there's a specific point which it happens at.

What would happen to make it require facing? I'm only replacing like for like

It's a pretty old bike I only have as a backup so I'm loathe to start spending loads on it.

    Thanks
