hi

i am looking to upgrade the wheels on my boardman team carbon from the stock ritchey pro wheels.

looking to spend £300 to £450 on clinchers (as little as possible to be honest). the bike will be used mostly for sportives as i have an older gtr i use as my training bike!

these dt's look a good saving but would i notice much difference from the ritcheys?:

also the mavic ksyrium elite seem to get a good write up.

or should i bling it up and go for a pair of carbon fibre? what size e.g 50 or 38's etc? some of the planet x and the fuertebici seem close to my price range.......oh and if they have white bits on them too even better he he!

cheers

Oh yea. Didn't read that far. I'd go for some carbon ones though, much lighter than alloy, and the aero profile of the rims also makes a big difference.

    thanks

can anyone give an idiots guide as to what the sizes e.g. 38's and 50's etc are best suited for and pros/cons?

also am i right in thinking you can get carbon wheels with alu braking surfaces and others are carbon? whats best?

    cheers

Keep the ones you have until they break. I'd only get racing wheels if I was racing...

I agree with Nap. Your Ritchey Pro are deep section/semi aero with an offset rear and come in at 1860g. You'll need something very tasty to notice much difference.

I changed to EA90SL's and noticed a marked gain, but I had money left to buy some bling with.

Wheels that came with it were not bad by any means.

    thanks.

you are prob right and i should just stick with whats on it.

i saw some nice carbon wheels and thought i would sell the ritchey's new before i used the bike to get some cash back towards the carbon ones.....just being a biketart!

out of interest i saw that the rear ritchey is offset. whats the advantages of having that?

thanks again for all your help

i've changed to mavic cosmic carbone SL's - look great (which is the main thing) and are far lighter than the ritcheys.

Because the cassette sits on one side of the hub, the spokes that side are more inboard and slightly shorter.

To get the rim running over the centre of the axle, requires different spoke length and tension from the left and right hand sides of the wheel. The DS Pro rims are asymmetrical on the rear and that helps even out spoke tension, giving a stronger and more rigid wheel for the weight.
