Okay, so I bought a silver (Under 18) race license a few weeks back, 2 weeks before my race. I did not receive the license in time for the race but I had my license number etc, and on the BC website it told me I had a silver license. I one my first 4th cat race which gave me enough points to progress to 3rd cat, but I'm yet to recieve my license, and now when I go on the BC website and click on 'my membership' it just says...

I'd give them a call on Monday.

Did you get a race licence on top of the silver membership?

There is no such thing as a silver licence. There's a silver membership. A race licence is separate.

So as Nap says, did you pay for a membership PLUS a licence (an extra £36 I think)?

If so, then you'll be upgraded to 3rd Cat for free and (eventually) a new licence will be sent out.

It all goes to your club secretary, so check with them.

Much less as a junior or youth which I think the OP is 13 or 0 I think.

sorry, i meant a silver membership, which cost £32.

I just tried to buy another membership and it said 'We're very sorry, it looks like you have a duplicate membership record on our system. We can help sort this out for you'.

The Silver membership on its own comes with a 'free' Provisional License, which will save you a few quid from single-day race fees but will not allow you to get any points. You need to spend the extra thirty-odd pounds to get the full racing license, for which you'll need to call British Cycling on the phone (there is no facility on the website to add a full license to an existing Silver membership).

Sorry, but you're not an official 3rd Cat yet! (Unless there is a genuine mix-up and you do have a full license)

^^ Wot he said. You need to purchase a race licence separately from your membership. If you haven't, you can - and when you do nicely explain you thought you had one when you won your race - and ask to be upgraded to Cat 3.

They may or may not do it - but if you won your first race, chances are you'll get the points again quickly anyway.

Then he wouldn't be riding in (and winning) Cat 4 races!

can I suggest the best thing to do is just to phone them up (details on their website). Every time I have done, the guys I have spoken to have been incredibly helpful and sorted things out really quickly.

I used to work there doing that - answering membership questions. And I agree - they are a really helpful bunch in general.* They realize it's just bike racing and for fun. Not life or death.

I agree they've always been very helpful. Only managed to get answers through e-mail though (pretty quickly), as the phone always seems to be busy when I've tried.

I have heard they are now very strict on back dating points even if you licence has not arrived yet. Good luck trying to get points retrospectively added to a race licence you had not purchased.

The reason would be that what’s to stop someone racing 4th cat for a season or more without paying for a licence and then when they do well in a race and get points paying for a licence and geting the points updated.

If you want the points pay the money..... Seems fair.

Although you would have to pay extra for a day licence, which depending on how many races you do in a season could come to more than the cost of a race licence.

I'm convinced, I've just ordered my full license (over the phone). Now I just have to get some points to justify it.
