Grand union canal ride

I organised a group to do it from Birmingham to London, about 2 years ago. I've also done the leg from Birmingham to MK a couple of times.
I would advise getting hold of the canal navigations map from British waterways. It was about £7 when I bought them ( 3 map pack for the entire length)
The only advice I can think of is use bombproof tyres as the first time I did it was after they had cut the Hawthorn along the route. After shredding through several inner tubes and patch repairs, got sick of the constant hiss of air escaping from my tyres.
The Leg from London to MK is easy going along mostly very good standard towpath. There is a section which is along grassy bank but not really a big issue.0 -

If you're cycling on tow paths remember you need a (free) licence or something or other. Never been stopped personally and i dont have one but if there is a group of you going it may be something to bear in mind.
You can get them from here:

Read this guys account it is from 2007 but still relevant, I ride the union often from West Drayton to Rickmansworth and it is no bother very flat as you would expect.A hardtail is best.
