Which is best? Is lockout really worth paying for if I'm riding on canal/cycle paths 80% of the time?

or get a proper mtb and buy some slicker, fast track tyres?

I've never understood the thinking behind hybrids.

a hardtail mtb would be much more versatile should your riding progress and you'd like to try trail centres etc.

Hybrids have the advantage of taller wheels so tend to ride smoother as such with less effort.

Get on them and see which ones are comfortable. If you ride on lots of smooth surfaces and don't want to waste energy then suspension lockout is useful.
If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much room!
