XTR rear mech problem

Hopefully some one can help?

I have a new Camber Pro with the XTR rear mech on a 10 speed cassette. I've only ridden it for maybe 100 miles and all of a sudden it won't change into the highest two gears, two smallest cogs.

The mech doesn't reach its limit but the shifters seem to run out of gears.

Could this simply be cable stretch on a new bike or something else?

Cheers

Gunky cables most likely. Clean, lube and reindex.

If it was cable stretch the problem would be getting into the two lowest (biggest) gears as unless its a rapid rise mech there should be no cable influence at all at getting into the highest (smallest) gear.

With SS, clean cables and check the mech is moving freely without the cable hanging up.

  • Cables clean and mech has full movement. Still have same problem.

I think it maybe a problem at the shifter now.

When you unhook the cable, does the mech spring back to the limit stop? Is it a rapid rise rear mech?

Was the shifter in the highest gear position when you reattached the cable?

Do Shimano even bother with rapid rise any more?

    Interesting from the Bikeradar review:

"Key to the improved rear shift performance is a new cable pull ratio that reduces line tension and is more tolerant of slight maladjustments and housing friction. Shimano say it's just a 20-30 percent increase so it's not quite as dramatic as SRAM's 1:1 setup, but combined with the rear derailleur's longer and more linear return spring, it still makes for a notably snappier and less vague feel overall plus better performance on bikes that run full housing. This is especially true when you move the chain into the outermost cogs where M970 could sometimes hesitate."

Doesn't seem like they do with the new 10 speed lol.

If the mech is not returning to the H limit stop then:

    - the cable tension is too high
    - the cables are sticky
    - the shifter is knackered
    - the mech is spring is knackered

Need to eliminate stuff to find out what is going on. Also ensure the mech hanger is straight.
  • I decided to start again and removed cabling etc and set up the mech from fresh.

It now works! Thank god, SS and SD
