Servicing fork, to remove or not to remove.

Thats the question

Problems i see from removing fork are,

I dont have a torque wrench, so once removed it means i going to have to get a LBS to refit the fork as i been told i need to use a torque wrench to refit it unless i wish to ruin the bikes bolts,stem/handlebar.

I hear that you can service a fork when still in bike and just wondering if that easy enough and what peoples thoughts are,
fork is a Tora 302 SL.

By the way is there a way to remove the" snap rings" from fork without special snap ring tool?

p.s the form rings in the fork do i need to remove them and re oil or can i leave them in place and just re-oil?(dont fancy buying any seal removers/inserters)

off the fork. you dont need a torque wrench.

and get some C lip pliers or you will be looking for the clips every ware.

  • off the fork easy, putting back is what i worried about, probally overtighten the bolts mainly

C lip pliers never heard of them, all i seen are those snap ring remover tools, going to halfords to see if they got them.

  • You don't need a torque wrench to re-fit them, just do them up tight by hand.
  • ok cheers

you have given me some confidence in doing it by hand.

    am i correct in saying..

when i re-attach fork i must first tighten up the stem bolts (have only 2) very lightly first, then tighten the topbolt untill i feel contact, retighten stems up then finish off with topbolt

Thats from what parktools say from what i gather,

By the way, i know you need to spray Isopropyl alcohol inside and around the fork to clean it, i got question though...... is that "neat" Isopropyl alcohol or a certain % i need to mix?

Dont want to blow up my house..

You don't tighten the stem bolts at all to start - turn the top bolt until headset play is removed. If you go to far, the steering tightens: so back off.

When are happy with adjustment, tighten stem bolts.

    NO the other way round.

try reading the info in the FAQs and also parktools.

    No on bolts.
Tighten the top cap bolt until there is no play, then tighten up the stem bolts, bit by bit alternating until they are tight.
