Hi, just wondered if anyone can give me advice. I recently bought a planetx carbon frame and forks that im about to build up. Do i really need a crown race cutter to prep the seating for the crown race? The seat of the race looks fine, would give it a clean up etc before the race goes on. The tool is too expensive for a one shot deal and my LBS is ages drive away. I just dont want to pay for a tool that I dont really need. Sorry for the noob question.

Depends on the design of the crown race and how much 'dressing' needs to be done - I've done quite a few with a hand-file where it's simply the case of removing lacquer or resin - depends on how far 'out' the fork is.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Thanks for the reply Monty, The crown race seat on the fork looks pretty smooth. This is the first time I will be doing this so wasnt sure if I "had" to use this a race cutter. Think i will just lightly tidy it up with a file. Thanks for the advice

Mine was a mono-C tapered fork and was already faced. Spend your money on a slide hammer instead. I would recommend a midgen of grease when fitting to a carbon fork.
