Cyclists in one of the UK's designated "cycling towns" are facing a daytime ban from the town centre.

They cited safety concerns, although the scheme has been operating without major incident for two years.

The areas in question are here (through the gate):

and here:

(past the burger bar)

Basically the thinking seems to be 'it would be mad to allow cyclists to cycle here, it's far too dangerous'. The problem being that cyclists have been cycling in these areas for two years with no incident.

The councillors in question are no doubt on fat car allowances and while implementing bike bans have done nothing about the daily carnage caused by cars and other motro vehicles, nor ineed are there complete off-road routes through the town.

Seems a bit silly, it's not like cyclist ride around badly and most of the riders I've witnessed riding through there treat it very well.

Having said that I'm only down there occasionally as and when neeeded but have to say that burger bar is awesome :-)

Wasn't Woking also the place full of nimwit councillors that wanted to make it illegal (via a bye-law) for cars to sit idling at traffic lights, making them switch off?

Apparently the only way they'll reopen cycle access there is if the burger bar is removed/closed.

Eh? If they want the burger bar removed, surely they want that other dodgy hut removed opposite. Then why stop there, they could also go after the jacket potato one and the stalls that set out along there. Flipping stupid if you ask me, I suppose they have no problem with the shop-mobility cart that whizzes around the old people?

Motor vehicles are unimpeachable, obviously, ditto the dangerous parking outside the Town Square.

I'm not sure if it's purely the burger bar, they just said 'clutter'. The jacket potato stand is not in the restricted area, the reason that that area is not restricted is because it's actually in an area where motor vehicles are allowed, and as mentioned obviously they are sacred and not to be questioned. See this photo: http://tinyurl.com/3v4g68o For some reason 3.5 tonne vans, pedestrians and fast food stands are deemed to co-exist perfectly happily, yet cyclists travelling at little more than walking speed obviously pose an existential threat to pedestrians.

I doubt anything will become of the decluttering, only a minority of Woking's Councillors cycle so why would they care? Nothing's been done about providing safe access through Victoria Arch under the railway line in several years, little reason to suppose this will be any different.

I think it's great. I now have to reason whatsoever to visit the cultural desert that is Woking.
