shifting problems

shifting down from big cog to small is fine but going back up the lever has to be pushed a long way to get it to shift, is it cable problems, your thoughts.

    what gears?
    normal or rapid rise?
    when was it last serviced?

    8 speed i think alivio shifters, god knows when last serviced, just bought for wife, Marin Muirwoods 2000.

    Are they combined brakes/shifters? I used to have an old bike with some and they were awful. Swapped them for some Avid levers and separate shifters.

    strange that it shift fine under cable pull.

    sounds like they are on their way out.

    sounds like a good service is needed and check the shifters are actually shifting correctly.

    if not it is replacement time.
