Will gears need adjusting after crank change?

Got my new cranks coming tomorrow and was wondering if changing the crankset and bottom bracket will have an effect on the gearing? The rings are the same size and everything so I'm assuming that it should all be ok?

Once the new cranks are on it will be obvious if any adjustment is needed.

Ok well I'm changing from my square taper BB and alivio crankset to an SLX one. I only ask as the bike is due in the shop to have its gears sorted tomorrow and it'll have the old stuff on it.

so are you changing the chain line?

    if yes then yes.

it depends on what is fitted. more info needed.

It will be a Hallowtech bottom bracket thats replacing my ancient square taper one so I guess the chain line will change? If so that's annoying!

Just learn to index your gears, 5 minute job, and not one that needs an LBS

If your changing the crankset yourself, re-indexing the gears should be easy, if the LBS are doing the changing get them to index at the same time, its part of the same job.

Paying an LBS to index your gears is shameful in my opinion, however, don't get them to do it until after youve/theyve chaged the chainset!
