New bike for the other half...

As the title says, looking to buy the missus a new bike. The 10 year old full suss Saracen she's got isn't really up to much, plus I can hardly lift it to get the dam thing onto the bike rack.

Convinced her hardtail is the way to go, with about £400 budget. She isn't an aggressive rider and doesn't need the mutts nuts. Just something that will be a reasonably easy ride. Preferably with disc brakes rather than V's.

So far I have come across this http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fuji/nevada-20-2011-womens-mountain-bike-ec024669#answers or this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_518273_langId_-1_categoryId_165499

Appreciate any input on either bike, or any other suggestions worth looking at. Thanks chaps!

  • Hi Scarbs, i'm just doing a simular thing for my missus. She currently doesnt have a bike but i am building her one for her birthday as a suprise.

After looking at bikes in a simular price range to you I decided to buy a second hand carrera vulcan off gumtree. Cost about £100 and the frame was in good condition. Alot of the frames from the Carrera range are pretty solid. Since collecting it i've ordered some new forks, new sadlle, grips, chain, handlebars and pedals. It starting to look like a really nice bike and components wise will be better than the stuff in the 300-400 price range. Over time I will upgrade the rear mech and put on some hydralic disks and then it will be spot on. All in all I expect it to cost about £250-£300.

Buying off the classified really helped too.

Similar to the Chris, I bought a new frame from Bankrupt on ebay, then kitted it out with new forks and headset and saddle then bought a decent donor off ebay (a GT) for all the other bits I needed (bits I sold on went for more than I paid for the whold bike!), the whole bike (LX rear mech, XT front etc) has cost me less than £100.

The wife didn't want a serious MTB so its on V-brakes and fairly basic fordks, also due to hip problems she needed a traditional ladies (low top tube) frame as she can't swing her leg over a saddle.

Id get the kraken over the fuji. While most parts are comparable, it has a better drivechain.
