A bit of a strange question I know, but can any of the Dutch speakers tell me how to pronounce the girl's name Milja (MILJA)? I've never come across it before. I think it can be Scandinavian as well, but this lady is from the Netherlands.

    Hi,
I'm no expert but it seems to be one of the more straightforward ones. Some names require half a bucket of spit and a laparoscopy to get right.

    I used this: http://translate.google.com/#nl|en|Milja

and clicked on the "listen" button.

    In there like swimwear...

By the way, Dutch women I know are often very forthright and tough. Some of them are also huge, so make sure your health insurance is up to date...

  • Thanks for that, its kind of how I guessed it. We've done the 'forthright' bit already, but she's not huge, hehe.

I wasn't implying anything by 'forthright', honest

Has to be a soft 'L', a little bit like an east London 'W' for 'L' apparently. One of many things I'm going to be getting wrong, I have a feeling.

I think what steve really means is that "English women are often implicit, indirect, and weak".

    It's all relative after all...

    Or you weren't memorable.

I'm sure there's something I need to remind you about. I'll have to think about it and get back to you.
