Hi everyone,
Got back on the bike for the first time in many months yesterday and took a trial run to work to see how feasible regular commuting would be.
Just over 17 miles one way later and my rear end is quite sore.
I had padded trunks under my bike tights (another first for me as i didn't have my baggy shorts on top)
Is there anything i can do after a ride to help my considerable backside recover quickly before other rides the following day. Other than getting better padded garments.
Any suggestions and any decent jokes concerning the subject title.gratefully received
Cheers
Al

If the sore is in the right place, just get back on the bike and cycle through it, you'll eventually get used to it. If it's not go looking for a better sized saddle.Do Nellyphants count?

Oh step away from the keyboard DD
In seriousness though, try a cream called "Natures Kiss", (Yes that IS what it's called)
Either that or look at your saddle position and where your sit bones are, You may need to alter it.
Love n hugs

Getting better padded garments s the only way to go I'm afraid, and also the more you ride the more the ass hardens up, as I'm finding out after 7 months off the bike due to illness.... Ooooh the pain, but it's getting better every ride I do.
I also find the cream does help but only on much longer rides, more than 17 miles you mention, and then only to prevent chaffing, broken skin 'sores' or 'bum blisters' forming... it doesn't seem to help the ass ache due to bruising/ lack of comfort on the saddle.Either that or look at your saddle position and where your sit bones are, You may need to alter it.0 -

The nose to tail tilt of your saddle and where you've clamped it in the post can make a big difference to which bits of down there are in contact. Different saddles fit different butts too, it will be worth a trip to the local bike shop (not halfords or asda tho ;-) ) to get a bit of fitting and saddle type advice. You need to consider seatpost height and your handlebars too to make sure your arms and legs are set right at the other contact points with the bike. Pedal crank consideration is OTT just yet. You could reduce your tyre pressure a bit to give a softer ride whilst yr bum toughens up but even when you've got your optimum set up, you'll still need to let yourself get settled in and work through the initial few days of discomfort.0

+1. I tilted my saddle up a few mm and made the difference between being almost un-rideable to being very comfortable and supportive. So try a few mm each way before buying a new saddle but don't scrimp on decent padded shorts if you plan on riding any reasonable distances.Pinno, מלך אידיוט וחרא מכונאי0 -
i did see a product in one publication called smack botty cream -you never know

You didn't say anything about how your were carrying your gear into work. Having spent a good part of today cycling around with a very heavy bag over my shoulders, I got very sore very quickly whereas I never have a problem with a light rucksack. Today, though, panniers would have been ideal. If you're carrying anything a bit weighty on your back, that weight is transferred to your sit bones. In return your sit bones will protest...0

Switched to my road bike from my touring bike yesterday, having nicely settled into the nice comfy well padded 170mm saddle on that, I'm now on a 140mm piece of fabric covered plastic. Ouch!
And then my knee went...Do Nellyphants count?

Cheers for all the replies and suggestions. would have replied earlier but was having password probs
I got back on the bike last night for an off road jaunt and for a while it was ridiculously uncomfortable but after a while it dulled down to just a dull ache.
i'll have a play about with the seat position and a few other suggestions and see what happens. It's probably time to update my padded gear anyway
deptfordmarmoset - I didn't have much in my rucksack, only some spare tubes etc. The heaviest thing would have been my spare water bottle. I wasn't working that day but just taking a dummy run to see if i could manage it. If i do start commuting in then i'll go down the panniers route.
I'm hoping it's just down to the fact that i've not biked regularly in such a long time. Back when i was out several times a week, i never remember it being that sore. You shall not pass! (Unless I'm knackered then I don't really care tbh)

Aye. Some sort of vinyl that looks like Leather; I'm now getting pictures of faded yellow BMX saddles in my mind.
