Understated Perfomers (I'm not actually buying owt though)

So I was cycling to the library on my old bike and wished I had a bike that was understated enough that I could cycle to the library, leave it locked there for the day, and cycle home in the evening.
I'm not actually going to buy a new bike any time soon, but it would be interesting to know what kind of serious bikes are out there that perform brilliantly/exceptionally, yet can be used everyday, locked up outside, and don't scream 'STEAL ME!' For the first time (maybe the second) I'm attracted to alu frames vs carbon
No outlandish graphics/geometry, no graphic-scarred wheels for me

I think I'd go for an old one. I saw a really interesting old steel framed 5 / 6 speed in Glasgow recently. He had cut off part of the handlebars, and had a huge plastic covered chain around it - yet it looked really well maintained, looked light and looked as though it would be very pleasant to ride. Very little commercial value so not worth stealing.
I later saw him cycle off, no helmet and the chain round his neck and arm.
