lost the clicking sound from my rear hub , does this mean it needs a service/repair as i actaully prefer it silent.

Cheers Rob

    does it still work?

what were you doing before it went silent?

Silent is ok, but after a while the pawls will begin to slip. Then service time and back to noisy I am afraid

Hmmm.... I wonder it this is what happened to mine.

I was riding on Thursday and felt a massive jump, thought it must have been the chain, but the chain and sproket looked ok.

Perhaps it was the hub !

ok there are only 2 things that make a hub quite. too much grease. but the noise come back as the grease gets moved.
    and pawl spring failure.

I would go with pawl spring failure
    easy fix
you can buy just the springs off hope it works out cheaper that way .
  • hmmm could be spings/pawls although i do grease my maxle from time to time , some of that sould have got in, hubs been on since april '09 and seen weekly rides,

might it be time for a full bearing/spiring/pawl overhaul anyway ?
  • Grease from the maxle can't penetrate through 2mm of solid alloy axle outside it to get into the pawls and ratchet.
Sounds (or not) like you've had 3 of the 4 pawls springs fail.

Yup, sounds like springs. They're only a tenner from Merlin anyway. Quite a few guys I ride with grease their Hope freehubs regularly to keep them quieter. Personally I prefer mine running loud...

If the springs have gone, do not ride that hub until you have had it apart to check.

running with a few pawls out can cause the ratchets to shatter which would need a shell replacing. Not life threatening, but might mean a lot of money to fix a hub that freewheels both ways

the ratchet is replaceable. It is just a screw fit. ( one reason why the Pro 2 were splitting the hub bodies were to thin. you do need the correct tool though.

there seemed to be a batch that split.

but i would not be worried.

Not at all convinced it was just a bad batch, unless that was a very big batch which is still getting made into new Hope Hoops ;) But, it's rare and pro 2s are common, therefore, I don't worry about it.

berty, checking the pawls is extremely easy, pro 2s come apart without much effort so just dive in and have a look.

Just pull it apart and have a look, there are vids on youtube.

If it is the springs give hope a ring and they will send some replacements free of charge, if the hub has split give hope a ring they will replace and rebuild your wheel free of charge, If your maxle axle has snapped give them a ring and they will replace free of charge!!!

Hope`s customer service is second to none.

The ratchet screws in to the hub shell?!

FFS why did somone not tell me that a few years back, it is one of the main reasons I do not have a pro 2 on the back (I destroy ratchets)

it is how most ratchet rings are fitted.

Most of the ratchets I have dealt with have been mounted on the freehub, so just swap that if it goes.

Thinking about it. The only hubs I have had apart have been like that. Probably means that Hope's way is much stronger as if more common, the hubs with it have not failed so I have not taken apart.
