Ive never done a cat 4 race before and im just wondering if i will be able to keep up on a cross bike? my road bike wont be ready by the time of the race i dont think.
Its not exactly practical but i was hoping it was managable.

depends how good you are, also i doubt there is much difference is there? put some proper road tyres on it, maybe change the gearing? and should be fine0

if you're paid up you might as well go either way. if you're good enough to do ithe full race on a road bike you should manage at least a good chunk of it on a cross bike i'd have thought."Unfortunately these days a lot of people don’t understand the real quality of a bike" Ernesto Colnago0

I've just come back from a race (I'm a really bad cat 4) and average speed was 25.5mph for 1hr11mins. Obviously being in a group helps!0

Just put on slicks and do your best, then tell us what happened!0

Cross bike is fine for racing as long as you have slicks on.
I took a fifth last Saturday and first on Sunday to get out of cat 4. I was riding a old Jake the snake (aluminium) and shod with Continental GatorSkin Road Tyre the steel bed ones.
As long as you can handle your bike and you have slicks fitted you can compete. If its crit racing it makes very little difference, obviously if you have a hilly cause then it makes more of a difference.0 -
It will be fine.
If your at a slight disadvantage it is still going to be very good experience and training for you.
The sooner you get involved in races the sooner you'll become a better racer, whatever your bike is.0 -
A cross bike with slicks will be fine in a road race (unless you are way undergeared)
A road racing bike in a cross race is total fail however!0 -
if you have a compact you'll be fine. If you have a 46/44x12 as your biggest gear you might find that your legs are turning over a bit quick!0

In the race I got my upgrade to Cat 3 the 15 year old who beat me (I came 3rd, he came 2nd) was on a cross bike.
It's not about the bike.0 -

once did a 3rd/4th cat race at Cystal Palace where one guy turned up and raced on an MTB, he managed to stay with the bunch for a good while.0
