Single chainset?

Struggling at present for a chainset for a 2007 Orange Hitman 4X bike I'm building. Just fitted a 68/73 Hope BB and am looking for a single ring chainset...
A couple of questions you may be able to help me with....
1, Can a Shimano SLX double chainset be run as a single, with a 38T ring and a chain device with out any grinding?
2. Same question for a DMR Extype?
