Regaining my fitness

I've now owned my Giant Terrago Trail bike since 07 and must admit it'n not seen a lot of action. This is year is going to be different.
Just ordered new forks !
I first want to increase my fitness level, I use to play a lot of football before rupturing my cruciate ligament in knee. My specialist recommended not to have the reconstruction done. So since then contact sports and football have been a no go.
So I adopted Mountain Biking, I have a cross trainer in my garage which I use but need to increase the frequency.
Can you reccomend any other relevant excercises to improve my fitness and stamina.
My overall aim is to get fit and weight loss.
Thanks guys & girls

Only one way of getting fitter to ride, and that's ride I'm afraid.
We do lots of trails (usually around Bedgebury) including riding there and back occasionally (12 miles each way), hill training (quite steep, 3/4 mile long) - do 6 or so times at reasonably steady pace, and on Thursday started a burst programme - v steep hill, start at bottom and go as hard as possible for 30 secs, turn around and repeat. Do three times and rest one minute, do another three, and rest minute and a half, do another three, then ride off to warm down. After first three, my legs burned more than after the 34 mile Wiggle ride at Storrington a fortnight back. I should add that wife looked at me and asked if I felt ok. Answer was no, felt sick and light headed, so would recommend you get fitter before trying this, I felt fine about 1/2 hour later though.
Ride, ride and ride again. Then some. Oh, and find a friend cos it's much more enjoyable and you can push each other.
