Back To Cycling After A Year Away

Hi all,
I have returned to cycling after over a year away from any excecise at all.
I have put on about 3 stone in weight and I would like to get rid of it
I have been out the last couple of weekends for gentle flat riding. not too gentle, enough so I am out of breath. I am probably doing about 5-6 miles on each outing.
I plan to step this up to every other evening during the week.
should I be aware of anything or just continue as is, I obviously dont want to over do it at this stage.

Try and vary your routes, otherwise you might get bored.XC: Giant Anthem X

Seems reasonable but remember that recovery is just as important as exercise so try not to overdo it, injure yourself and be forced to take time off. Maybe supplement your bike rides with a bit of mid-week swimming?
Long, steady rides (+10 miles) at 60-70% intensity are very good at burning up excess weight. When you feel up for it, try one in the morning before breakfast but take something to eat just in case the trail starts spinning round.0 -
Both replies sound sensible, thanks guys.11 Scott CR1 Comp0

I'd also add that everybody has off days and it's important to recognise them for what they are and not press on and bust yourself up in pursuit of an unachievable goal (for that particular day).
Just cut the ride short, spin back home and try again another day.0 -
any chance of building your self up commuting ??0

I'd love to clycle from the station in london to the office, unfortunately the rules on the train are no NON collapsable bikes during rush hour.11 Scott CR1 Comp0
