Do you call it a stanchion on a rear shock? Anyhow.... had this same issue a couple of years back on my Trek Fuel ex8 which had the same shock as my now 3 month old Zesty...... There is quite a bit of oil on the stanchion, I clean it off and after a bit of riding, there is a fair bit more..... enough to have a wet dust ring all around the stanchion.

Is this normal or is it leaking oil? I know there is meant to be a very thin smear, but this seems excessive.

Should I send it for a service? Mojo? it is in warranty by a good while.

edit: so it is the shock body not a stanchion!!!!!

is there a pool under the bike when you come back to it?

You have a choice of two oils.

Float fluid, which I think is blue, or dampener fluid which I think is pink.

Can you tell the colour of the oil?

You might want to do the air can service yourself to check the seals if float.
If pink, off to Mojo it goes (and ask them about their custom tune as only £30 if they are repairing shock at same time).

How much riding have you done since you last serviced your shock

Cavegiant - I'm not sure - as I said, it is not dripping off, just plenty wet. I shall try and check. What is this custom tune you are on about? What does it do?

Thewaylander - The bike and shock are brand new 3 months ago and I'd guess I've covered 150-200 miles.

Rp23 is 'custom tuned' when new by Fox.

What this means it has about 9 different damper settings that your bike manufacturer will have chosen.
This is fine if one of the 9 settings works perfectly with the suspension design and you are exactly average weight.

Aftermarket custom tune will have the shock set up precisely to perform for your weight, bike and riding style.

You have probably heard of the 'push' tune. This is half way there for a fraction of the cost.

My RP23 went from a wallowing power sapping, easy bottoming piece of crap to an excellent toy. I now have uses for all 3 pro-pedal settings, it pedals perfectly, is still supple to bumbs and ramps up right.

The RP23 lets you adjust the spring pressure and rebound to compensate. However the compression circuit is more complex and needs specialist tools to adjust.

So short answer, it means the compression circuit is set up for YOU!
