Got some time to try fix what i thought was a worn cassette and chain.
the chain tool said it was well over "1" so i need to replace cassette too.
But after a quick clean and proper look, is my cassette really needed of a replacement.
a quick answer be great
heres pictures, most of the wear i think is around the smallest/small section

so what you recon, carry on with replacement or just replace the chain?
p.s im correct in saying that i can just measure the old chain with the new one then cut the new one to the same size as old one right? simples...

TBH i'd replace the cassette now, it looks fairly shagged.0

ps I would fit the chain properly as the old one will be stretched, and may not have been optimum when originally fitted.
Otherwise count the links in the old one, and use the same number of links, not length of stretched chain.I don't do smileys.

i fitted the new chain using the method based on guides that is.
large chainset, large spocket, line them up.
then where the end of chain overlaps the other count "1 chain section+ inner, cut"
like this guy does
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSl8F6ZL ... re=related
actually turned out to be shorter than current chain when i lined them up, nearly 1 chain section shorter.
not going to replace cassette havnt got time now but if it slips when i try using the cassette then il replace it.

Paypal seems to be the safer payment option there.Statistically, Six Out Of Seven Dwarves Aren't Happy0 -

went for ride, the chain is slipping on the gears i used the most, sadly the commuting gears, so just a couple, so even though its only a couple of bad gears gota replace the cassette either way.
out of interest when you replace cassette and put the "cassette lock ring" on, it says that you "put the QR though the lockring to secure it"
silly question, how i get the QR though the lockring without taking the whole QR out off the wheel...London2Brighton Challange 100k!

You don't, QR just slides out. I think they mean to secure the tool, not the lockring itself.I don't do smileys.

ok managed to work it out.
just noticed how ugly and dirty it is down there in the QR....
at the cassette end of the QR it very very dirty, all clogged up with mud and stuff.
Quick question.
can i just use some water /degreaser to remove it and make the cassette end of QR clean or no?
Also....the cassette sits on the hub i noticed is greased (maybe grease from chain fell between the cassette parts..?)
checked parktool site and doesnt say grease the hub that the cassettesits on but instead
"Grease threads of lockring and thread lockring into freehub."
understand the lockring part but what they mean by "and thread lockring into freehub"??London2Brighton Challange 100k!
