im thinking about getting a second bike, it has a tora 289, which i know isnt the best. ive had a blast around on a 318 with motion control, and really liked the way it felt so my question is,

can motion control be added to a 289?

I think it can, but i just want to double check. would i just need the MoCo cartridge and topcap?

obviously, fitting it myself would screw up the warranty, does anyone know whether or not i could send it to TF tuned (or similar) to have it fitted and still maintain the warranty?

cheers,

Ben

You can do it very easily just buy the MOCO cartridge and top cap adjuster and drop it in with fresh oils, you may also need a new damper assy as the one on the 289 is different from the one in the 318,different part numbers ,but it may be ok.

I would not waste the money, you are aware that the bushes in the 289 lowers and the 302 lowers are not serviceable after spending all that money on a moco damper, the bushes could go and you would have to shell out for a new lower at great cost.
  • No, you can't do it very easily. In fact you can't do it at all.

The Turnkey system on the 289 is designed for a OE set of forks that have a narrower ID than the 318 MoCo versions and the internals are not cross compatible.

    Hi Kevolution,

I am giving my comments based on past experience,at one time the TORA 289/302 could be purchased as a retail product, and If you researched a bit harder you would have found out that that the differences in id only conform to the steel stanchions on Toras vs the alloy stanchions on the Recon ,Reba etc. The uppers on all Toras are the same id.

Thus the alloy stanchions have a different id than the steel.
Now if he still wants the moco damper he just uses one from an Argyle which has an adjustable flood gate,or the standard Tora moco unit.

    The part number is
    ArgyleComp Damper Moco Adjust Gate
    Part # 11.3015.017.000

You can order it from a local bike shop.

By the way there is a thread on this very issue with pictures of modded Toras, with MOCO here.

Now Kevolution please do not be so offensive in future, I'm only trying to help,I have done many mod's on Toras ,Recons, the parts are interchangeable for a reason, not all parts can be swapped however.

Remember that Toras etc have in some cases shorter stanchions for OEM purposes, and the tora and recon has the same chassis as an older model Rev or Reba so some lower legs may be swapped.

    Don't believe everything you read.

By the way Supersonic had a moco for sale, I was going to buy it a while back to upgrade a 289 U-Turn. In the end I sold the fork to fund a Marzocchi. He also had the 318 rebound damper unit which went with the MOCO damper, but was only for a Tora trail fork,so 130mm travel only, this is because the push rod on the damper is longer to Accommodate the longer stanchion.

The Otero is great! A very different ride from the Zaskar, but that was the intention. Heavy as standard, but new tyres help shed some.

    Tora 289 works well ;-)
