Hi

Ive went ahead and bought an Old Mercier Road bike. Not entirely sure of the year. It came with a ridiculously large seat that I want to change, i prefer something sleek like the specialized Riva saddle i have on my newer road bike. the saddle is bolted on.

Do i have to change the seat post or is there an adapter that allows a railed seat to fit on my seat post?

Do you guys know the names for the two types of saddle mounts?

Thanks

From your description you have a straight seatpost and the saddle clamp where the saddle meets the seatpost is a seperate item. You have three parts here. The seat post, saddle clamp and saddle. Your newer saddle will fit the old seatpost but you need to play around with a 14mm spanner iirc to get the saddle to fit. Look at the bottom of the saddle and you have something like this.

This will come off when the nuts on either side are undone and can be put onto your new saddle but you might have issues with the clamp hitting the underside of the saddle.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Here are some pictures of the clamp and saddles...

I tried installing the new one with the old clamp but it doesn't fit properly...the one you showed me has a nice little rail slot...which is awesome... As you can see mine is completely flat....

Should I buy a new one, like the one in your image...

Im assuming I cant fit this kind of rail attachment to a normal post?

You can either buy the clamp I've pictured in my post from SJSC and fit your new saddle to the old seatpost or buy a new seatpost with the microadjust clamp in the size of your current seatpost, the size is usually engraved on the bottom and usually under the crud.

That's probably the simplest and lightest option. Just be very careful that you get the correct diameter; there's a bewildering range to choose from, and 0.2mm either way can mean it slips or won't go in!
