A mate has got new TORA forks for his Carrera Vulcan to replace his knackered suntour ones ... cant see it being an issue to fit but wondered how people cut the steerer down to size properly?

Also anything else should watch out for?

Hi said mate here also, i was to bone idle to post a topic as i was in bed but anyways.
Also another thing, as i was being quoted £50 by a LBS Me and Scott were going to give it a bash. Also they told me i should buy a new headset.

Seeing as the bike is only 12 months old, is this set in stone. As i can't see it being shot at already.

They're having a laugh. You may need a star nut (about 50p) but other than that,

remove old forks (keeping all headset bits in order)
move crown race from old forks to new forks
    measure old steerer
measure and mark new steerer with tape
check the two are the same from the top of the crown to the top (ie double check your measurements)
cut using a sharp hacksaw and an old stem as a cutting guide, if in doubt go a little long
take sharp edges off with a file
    hammer in star nut
    reassemble
    ride

With Ride-w on this, £50 is frankly taking the urine, its about a £25 job at most if the headset is OK (and you give no indication it isn't) I've swapped lots of forks and never had an issue, in fact I have another set to do as my younger Daughter wants pink forks on hers (laugh not!)

Nice one guys ... what is the star nut you mention? What does it do?

I thought £50 was rather steep. It costs less to have chain and sprockets, oil change, front and rear pads fitted to the motorbike.

The Vulcan hasn't really had many miles done on it in the past 12 months, only in the last 6 months have i been out on it every week.

So it may need a lube up the headset and thats it.

Where can i get a Star nut from? Leisure lakes or something or Another local bike shop. Didn't help with him ummming and arrring on the phon for 10 mins before he told me to brin it down next week and he may get round to it.

i'd go to a proper lbs, purely because it's nice to support them.

It's the sort of thing we'd show you how to do and take you through the entire process if we're quiet.
  • £50 is rather high considering if you allready have old fork.

If you didnt have old fork maybe they just trying to pretend it requires more work, but with the old fork allready all you gota do is check against it for size.

then again evan cycles quote "£25 to remove forks and £75 service, not including the £25 to remove if they attached"... utter mental.

let us know if you do,do it DIY as il be interested to see how easy they are to remove and replace toras, as i need to service mine. :)

I would agree if I could find a decent LBS near me ... I've yet to find one that is helpful!

Can you keep us posted on this if you decide to do it yourself? I would like to replace my crappy RST fork with a Rock Shox. Would rather do it myself if its possible.

We'll see how we get on! Looks like a lovely fork. Its a 100mm Rockshox Tora SL. Minus the pop lock tho. £94.99 from JE James Cycles. Wil purchase the pop lock for the lock out on it when i get some more pennies.

Hope it looks alright as the fork is white and my bike is Black.
