Hi
Can i re tap the thread on my fork post mount?? the previous owner must have cross threaded the bolt. I'm running v's at the mo and want to upgrade to discs
Also how hard is it to fit disc brakes that are already bled and reading to fit??

if the thread is stripped then you will not be able to rethread it.
most post mounts dont have enough material for a helicoil.
new lowers needed.
and why I dont like Post mount."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

or new forks !! how much are new lowers for marzocchi mx pro eta??0

previous owner deserves a slap round the head - how did he/she manage to do that?
either hamfistedness or the bolt was not done up tight and wore the thread?
.... just checked M6 Helicoil needs 6.3 mm hole so you may get away with it.
or find a man with a TIG to fill in the boss and retap.0 -
sounds like a a right nightmare. If the forks were £400 Fox's i may have considered fixing but with decent discounts around would i be better off buying a new set and sticking the marz on ebay as v brake only forks??????0

... another possibility is to use JB Weld or similar epoxy stuff - the ones that clam to be a strong as metal.
maybe make a DIY clamp round the fork leg to hold the bolt in place e.g. jubille clip? (won't look great but will save you a load of dosh).0 -
I did this on my Fox F100s (I think off a Spesh Epic Comp) - it is possible to helicoill them no problems at all - just make sure that the holes are opened out to correct size and central to the original hole.
I did both holes to make sure did not happen again.
Try a local engineering company if your LBS wont do it.0 -
If you can not helicoill, you could try this fix my friend has used to good effect on his f120's,he just used a piece of threaded bar screwed into the hole and a washer and bolt to secure the brake mount to the fork, works like a charm and this has been going for over a year.0

in fact i take that back. looking at the spare set of lowers i have here the top mount should take a Helicoil with out any issue but the lower may be an issue as there is less metal around the hole."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
