i found this website www.sheldonbrown.com http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/ about the calculation of gears. the problem is i don understand what the calcution means.

Just scroll down on the calculator page and you will find explanations of 'gain ratio', 'gear inches', (my prefered one) and 'meters development' (commonly used in Europe and gaining ground here).
