met my mate at his 9AM on Saturday,

he went to the deepest depths of his garage and came back with what I presumed was a carbon fibre boardman bike, but since it was caked in mud from his last ride a week or maybe 2 back I wasnt sure.

I of course, clean, polish and spray copious amounts of teflon stuff and GT85 on my pride and joy after every ride.

30 Kms out and snap .... his rear derailer cable goes ping - smallest sproket only from now on.

I made him finish the ride, including going up a steep hill (which to be fair to him he made) with just 2 choices of gear ... both of which werent great

anyway gave me a laugh ... hope you enjoyed your rids this weekend

Next time screw the derailleur to the middle of the block. Quick and much more meaningful.

You don't carry spare brake and gear cables just in case? Shame on you.

isnt this why you bought the Mrs a 4x4 and a mobile phone?

It's because a gear cable broke almost exactly half way between work and home. It was all uphill from there, too. They weigh sod-all and are easy to fix

Much more economical than a Mrs or a 4x4.

I'm assuming this is a tongue in cheek comment!
Does anyone other than a cycling tourist do this?

Nope, straight up. I also have a couple of spare spokes and chain links.

I've never had to use them myself, but I've saved the day for several others. Shit happens. If you're not prepared you're stuffed.

I do on the MTB. I've broken a couple in the last 2 years. Only seems to happen when the bike's iced up though.
