1 x 10 speed

Hi, I'm building a 29er Scandal, I have a 9 speed XT chainset which I plan to use as a single 32 tooth front ring only. Will a 10 speed cassette, chain and rear mech with shifter work with the front 9 speed chainring?

Do you know whether I'd need a long or normal cage rear mech?

Medium/normal cage will do fine, you could probably get away with a short cage for 1x10.
