ever repaired a shifter? Jammed!

Right, snapped the front shifter cable, pulled it out and replaced it. Shifted up as I was tightening and aligning the mech and the shifter jammed in third. No amount of tugging and pushing of the cable, and nudging triggers will get it to change back down. I've started stripping off the covers only to find a maze of whirly bits and springs. I daren't go no further. Has any one had a jammed shifter and recovered it?

If not, it's going to be an SLX 10speed upgrade
