I have just bought a Garmin 705. I mapped a route on 'ride with gps' and loaded it on and started my ride. Everything was ok until i got to a certain part of the ride it kept telling me to make a u turn even though I new I was going the right way. Is this a mistake I have made when mapping the route and has anyone else come across this ? Apart from that I think its a great bit of kit.

To ensure that the unit follows exactly the route you have plotted, you need to turn off recalculation. Go to Menu-Settings-routing, then set recalculation to off. Otherwise, the unit will think it knows better than you! I also find it is better to set Guidance Method to "Off Road". This then ensures you are basically following your route as if you'd drawn it on a mpa, rather than the unit trying to shoot off down roads it has chosen. Only turn these back on, if you actually want the unit to auto-route for you,

    Rick

lucca - I've had the same thing - seems to follow OK for some of the route then goes tits up and tells me to u-turn. I'll try the tips Rick has given but if you find it happening again I do something like turn of navigation (can't remember exactly what it's called) so it still shows the breadcrumb trail on the map though you lose the turn reminders.

I'm using the freemap download that most people recommend - wondered if it was a problem with that.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

If you are using OSM maps - i.e. the free downloads, some have auto routing, some don't. If they don't, then auto routing won't work, and if they do, I have found that sometimes the routing is questionable. For example, there is a place not far from here we ride to, but if I autoroute on the OSM map, it takes me up a river!!

  • I have never managed to get the navigation working without being taken on a different route, I now load up my rides useing a TCX. file and just follow the map without the unit beeping at you for turns. Hope this helps.

I used the way point feature in the Gamin why training overseas and trying to escape towns and cities - it was brilliant - it was buying the maps that was painful
