Peddle Up!

Having recently shelled out some fairly serious money for a new bike I'm reviewing my insurance provisions. Obviously I need to check and amend the policies but I thought I'd ask a spot of feedback on some relevant scenarios:
a) Bike is stolen from normal secure storage at home.
b) Bike is stolen when away from home e.g. when you take a comfort break on a long ride.
c) Bike is seriously damaged during a ride (pot hole, spoke failure, losing it on gravel).
d) Bike falls off bike rack on car.
e) Some idiot runs into the bike rack on the back of the car (I've seen this happen!) .
Thanks.

a/ Should be covered by home insurance providing the bike is below the value limit or covered as a special item.
b/ As above providing it was locked up. A small cable lock should cover this.
c/ As above.
d/ Grey area. Have you taken enough care fitting it on?
e/ Should be covered but be prepared for a claim against the idiot.0 -
If your bike is covered on your home insurance then it should be covered under situations a, b and c assuming you've taken sensible security precautions, i.e. you've locked it, and your insurance covers accidental damage. You may also be covered for d as accidental damage and e will be covered by the idiot's insurance.
If your bike is covered by a bike specific insurance then it will be covered for accidental damage but only for theft if it is secured with a rated bike lock, most of which are too heavy to carry around and certainly too heavy to take on a long ride. It will probably not be covered if your normal secure storage at home is not connected to your house (e.g. a detached garage). You will also pay more for the insurance cover.0
