Hello all!

I am 27 and completely new to biking.... I know how to ride one , but am no where qualified with any of the techniques involved :)

I hit the gym about 3 times a week but most of my training is focused around weights, i would love to get on board with the people here on some trips :)

So as a complete beginner i had a few questions....Since i am not based off UK; please laugh it off if it sounds strange...

1) Is there any form of license required to ride a bike ?
I have a motorbike license from my native, i am not sure if it helps or is even required.

2) What kind of distance / trails should a beginner try out ?
As i mentioned i go to the gym , but by no means i am good when it comes to stamina. I have an exceptionally high heart beat as well , so not all is in my favor.Personally i do not prefer riding on roads and would prefer an off road environment, but I am ready to walk before running.

3) Is any one around in Basingstoke... ? I would love to meet up , catch a few pointers and pints.
PS: I am a dude not a dudette!

If any one knows any basic training courses around , please let me know. Is there any set of links , which explains basics regarding to biking.

4) What kind of attire is required. I come from a warm country, i never had to put on thermals, so i am a little lost as to the kit which one should be fitted with when one heads out. I plan to rent out and give it a shot before i splurge on it. Not too sure if rentals give out any with the bike kit.

I guess that's all for now. Hope to hear from you all.

Cheers!

  • Hey!

You dont need a license to ride a bike firstly. As for the rest i suggest you get some padded shorts, the saddle for the first few weeks is a killer!

As for training etc, go out on a canal or something and build yourself up the more confident you get. Canals are mainly flat with small incline by the Locks i started out there.

Just have fun with it finding out is one of the best parts.

Have a look in the London Calling thread in Rides. We ride regularly in the Surrey Hills, Swinley Forest and Tunnel Hill which are all fairly close to Basingstoke.
Always happy to have a new person ride along.
Not sure about hiring a bike, but the bike shop at Swinley used to. I will try and find out tomorrow.

Go into your local bike shop. They'll be happy to give advice on riding and the right equipment. They'll also know where the best local trails are.
