Hybrid Bike...?

Hello... well as you can see, i'm new to this forum. Anyway, I've got around £300 to spend on a new bike and i thought I'd ask some opinions before I go and try some. I think i'm looking for a hybrid bike - it would be for mostly roads and smooth-ish tracks, but i don't want it to fall apart if i decide to do a little bit of off-road/bumpier paths. Anyway, you guys know waaay more than me about bikes than me, so i would love suggestions. But these are some I have been looking at online:
Carrera Subway 2 - £300
Giant Seek 4 - £315 (sounds like a good deal on the 2010 model?)
Trek 7.0 fx - £300
Thanks!

I wouldn't call a bike with 26" wheels a hybrid. I am an advocate of 26" mountain bike wheels for general/utility-type cycling/touring. Having a bike that you can fit full length mudguards and a pannier rack to is no bad idea - note that this can be tricky with a bike with disc brakes, and sometimes not even possible.0

Thanks for your help, so 26" wheels would be good for me? I've heard that MTB wheels can be a bit heavy for longer road cycles?
I did think about paniers, but I decided that I wouldn't really use them.
Another thing, Do you think suspension in this price range for my uses would be pointless? I have read that it just adds unnecessary weight but I don't have much experience, except on a kids mountain bike when I was younger.0
