Been having a few issues with my rear brake so last night i thought i'd have one last go at fixing it myself before taking it to my LBS. Even though the wheel was still spinning and thinking to myself i bet that would hurt if i caught my finger in the rotor bam my hand slipped and caught my finger in the rotor  The bad news is i now have a broken finger and have had to cancel my riding weekend away with the lads but good news is after 8 hours in A+E last night they managed to reattach the end of my finger with butterfly stitches, glue and plenty of surgical tape.
There would have been blood still on the rotor but my dad cleaned it off along with the blood on the floor before i could get pics
I've always expected to get injured at somepoint mountain biking but never realised it'd be when sevicing my bike Oh well at least six weeks out of the saddle i'm going to die of boredom
What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?

I never realised just how sharp a disc rotor could have been
Just gutted because i was due to ride Gisburn tomorrow, Lee + Cragg Quarry saturday and Llandegla sunday
They said 6 weeks but i'm hoping to be riding again after 4 fingers crossedWhat if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?0 -
Darwin award perhaps??? Sometimes you know you shouldn't do something but it's happening before you even know about it and then you are just a spectator along for the ride.
Rule of thumb (no pun intended) is don't put your fingers anywhere you wouldn't put your c*ck!0 -

You wont be corssing those fingers anytime soon!..0 -
Met a guy at Swinley Forest who actually lost the end of his finger on a brake rotor... by comparison you got away lightly0

Yeah there could definately have been a worse outcome and initianally i thought i'd taken it clean off, according to my mate whose a nurse i'm not totally out of the woods yet as the diagnal angle that it's cut it can be a bit of a pain when it comes to healing properly.ollie_lucas1985 wrote:Muttly1981 wrote:They said 6 weeks but i'm hoping to be riding again after 4 fingers crossed

I've seen a few photos of people who have done the same thing... out of interest, what were you actually doing to catch your finger in the rotor? :?0

I'd just oiled my chain and spun the back wheel up just too make sure everything was running ok and could hear the brake rubbing slightly so i thought i'd ajust the caliper and as they say the rest is historyWhat if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? i did a very similar thing involving a cars brake set up, a long story short after 3 hours in A & E and surgery i had my whole finger bandaged just like yours
3 stitches, fractured and half a nail later...... bandage off after a week then riding the next day
you will be riding again in no time hope it heals.Scott Reflex 20

I've done the same though, I didn't break my finger, just lost the end of it. It hurts more than what you can do out on tre trail because you haven't got the adrenaline.0

I'm at the fracture clinic tomorrow and hopefully the gash will be healing nicely because i'm hoping to ride up at Llandegla on saturday. Riding with a broken finger doesn't really bother me i just don't like the idea of opening up the wound again.iLoveDirt wrote:Ah nice, i always tend to have the foresight to stop the wheel spinning before adjusting the calliper bolts, for fear of such an accident occurring to me Wink
I thought to myself that i should stop the wheel but still went ahead :oops:getonyourbike wrote:I've done the same though, I didn't break my finger, just lost the end of it. It hurts more than what you can do out on tre trail because you haven't got the adrenaline.
Lucky for me i've only had one bad accident when out riding that put me out of the saddle for 8 years and if it wasn't for the adreniline at the time i wouldn't have got back to the car. After a trip to the hospital i spent the next 4 weeks sleeping on the couch after it turned out i'd broke two vertibrate in my back along with 3 broken ribs and other injuries. What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? adrenaline really is great, it gets you through until you've got somebody else to sort you out. I'm glad evolution gave it to us.0

The fracture clinic took my dressing off, but left the stitches in to come out by them selves  ouchy lol they gave me a few dressings, so obv I advise a dressing, your glove obv & one finger braking for time being. I took a few spare dressings with me on the first ride after but never needed them, as for my broken finger... only ever felt discomfort when I knocked it, still do occasionly, I did mine in February
Good luck dudeScott Reflex 20

Ouches, the first picture is similar to the ammount of damage i managed to sustain allthough it was more of a diagnal cut i just hope it doesn't end up like the second picture :?What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? Managed to get a quick picture today while the nurse had to nip in the next room
After talking to the doctor and doing a few tests i think riding this weekend is out of the question as i can't even bend the end of my finger yetWhat if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? 3 weeks on and healing nicely just can't wait until it's 100% which will be unlikly as the doctor said i've damaged the nerves in the nail bed so my not get full feeling back in the end of my finger :-( Been doing a little bit of dirt riding in the last week and get my ful suss back tomorrow night so i can see a trip out to Healy Nab at the weekend

thats pretty good going !
i never damaged my nail bed (luck was on my side), its just grew back at a dodgy angle  fair play to you getting back on the dirt, it looks a hell of alot more painful than what i did.

I won't lie it hurt like hell and i shed a tear or two
Got my full suss back today from Evans after having the rear mech replaced on warranty and went up to my local jumps and although i knew they'd a little boggy, when i got there lads on moto-X bikes have basically chewed them all up so went for a bit of a ride to another local spot and whilst lifting the bike over a fence caught my finger between the frame and fence post :? gotta say it made me jump a bit lucky for me i guess hat it didn't open the cut back up but i guess the broken bone may have took an unwanted knock but it's not gonna keep me off the bike. What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? Lost the end of my finger tip when i used to ride BMX's in the 80's.
Dumb moment, trying to fix my chain on the chain ring whilst still riding.
Resulting in, finger tip chopped, trip to A&E, 5 weeks with a bandage.
We found the finger tip in the end of my glove when i got home.
Doh!0 -
sounds very familiar,I managed to do the same thing last year on a hope floating rotor.Spinning the wheel round to see if it wasn't buckled and my finger slippped into the aluminium spider the it sliced down to the boneI assume this is French petrol - be careful in reverse - the car will retreat rapidly at the least provocation.0

Totally unrelated. But this thread reminded me of a moment years ago. Parked up in the car with a bunch of mates. I'm sat in the drivers seat, leaning back, and the back door's open, so I stretch my arm back, put my hand out of the back door, and I'm holding onto the top of the car. Nice and comfy!
Until someone, not realising the position of my hand (and why should they!), slams the door shut! All four digits fully jammed in the door.
Thankfully, there's either a lot of flex in the upper half of car doors, or a lot of insulated padding.. Just smarted a bit in the end. But my blood ran cold for that brief second.
Just one of the many thing I have learned not to repeat0 -
So after 3 1/2 weeks i thought it was about time i hit the trails again at Llandegla and as the saying goes "to much too soon" my finger is fine but i thought i'd hit the free ride section first and stacked it bigtime on the tabletop after the bridge with no knee pads
Needless to say i went into the shop and invested in some new pads
Woke up this morning for work to be greeted with a funny coloured football where my knee was
and a couple of very sore and brused thumbs
Lucky for me i was wearing my fullface as looking at the scrapes on the helmet my jaw would have been in a similar state to my knee :?What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?0 -
Muttly1981- I know exactly how you feel as I did exactly the same thing on Saturday but I hit my knee and rolled but ended up on my feet. Big swelling (it's still swollen), lots of grazes and now, lots of bruising. Needless to say that now I've got a pair of 661 Kyle Straits. At this rate, I'm going to do some serious damage to this knee without protection.0

The annoying thing is i had intentions of buying some knee pads on saturday but didn't ave time as i was running late for the football then 24 hours later i'm lying on the deck in pain. I just nipped upstairs to change my top before i nip out and noticed new grazes and a nice looking bruse on my ribs (i think i hit the handlebars/stem). Think i'll be off the bike for a couple of weeks but i'm going to need to hit the same section as it really did knock my confidence and i know nailing it will be just what i need to get back to my best.
I got myself a set of 661 Veggies HH editions and they feel a lot better that i thought they would have done. What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place?
