Hello folks!

Have decided to buy the New Sportive Racing from Ribble and want to put out a few queries. I built it using the bikebuilder facility and have opted for:

- 011 Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset
- Full SRAM Rival groupset

Because there's a lot of money involved I want to make the rtight choice so...have any of you out there bought this frame, perhaps this combination and what are your thoughts on how well they will go together? Do any of you have positive/negative things to add about either the wheelset mentioned or the groupset?

Any thoughts would be most welcome and although I know a lot of it is down to personal preference I am really struggling with my decision. I was going to go with Campag Centaur but the lack of an 11 ratio puts me off a bit and otherrs have said that SRAM RIval is better than the 105 option offered, and others the opposite...

What do you all reckon and many thanks for any input...

I have just got a bike with SRAM Rival on it (my first foray into SRAM), and I am not convinced its "better" than 105.

Firstly, I don't like the way the shift lever "bulges" out the rubber hood when changing up, I also don't like the way that the indexing has to be SPOT ON, there is nothing in the way of feathering or triming, like you can with Shimano.

Other than that, once its setup properly its very, very crisp to shift with, certainly quicker and crisper than my 105 setup, plus the levers look nice.

Which GS is best is a matter of opinion. Personally, I'd go for Shimano over SRAM, but that's just because I like Shimano. Any GS from any of the main manufacturers will be fine.

People argue the toss, but it's really a very personal thing.

Great wheel choice BTW! Enjoy! :D

Look at the Special Edition bikes. Less choice, much cheaper.

  • Thanks for the replies people.

I have looked at the Special Ed bikes but found that the wheel choice was very limited - not convinced with the Superleggera over the Mavic Ksyrium Elites.

Thanks also for the advice on the GS.
  • I think I'll stick with the SRAM Rival, like the 4.5 on the review here - that's good enough for me but any more contributions very welcome on the subject!

I think SRAM is the right choice. Definately crisper than 105 IMHO. I ride bikes with both and really prefer the SRAM (although admittedly I've used it for longer than the 105). And the carbon levers do look cool! 8)

I can only comment on the Elites - stiff, light and bullet proof,
I upgraded to a set of SLs a while back because i've got more money than sense but there isn't that much difference to the elites. I don't know what wheels they have but i've got a set of Shimano RS80s and i can't praise them enough, cheaper than elites and up to now as good, if not better.

I seem to recall reading that you race (apologies if not).
I found that in a race Sram is spot on - just something about the way it works that you can fire out shifts a lot more effectively. You will appreciate it in a race! I think all the Sram groupsets are more orientated towards racing than Shimano.

  • Thanks again people, really appreciate the feedback; just having a few issues with colour now!

    :D

Your input has been most helpful...nearly went for the Gran Fondo but the new Sportive just tipped it, largely because it's lighter. Will post a photo when all said and done.

    Your spec sounds spot on!

Rival are superb, easy to set up and mine haven't needed a quarter turn adjustment in a year. The shift action is fast and feels 'right'.

Good wheel choice too, it will be a nice bike.

Post pictures when you get it.

Just bear in mind that the geometry is different - longer and lower on the New Sportive.

  • Hmm, okay, that has me worried a bit, re. geometry... don't want anything too uncomfortable and have gone for 110mm stem as opposed standard 100mm?
