You've not said what you've got on the front, but to spin out a 12 you need to be going pretty fast, even with a compact 50 and a measly 90rpm you're barrelling along at over 30mph (so a sub 20minute 10mile TT on a road bike...) If you can do that, you really need to start competing at a serious level.

Changing to an 11 will give 9% faster for the same cadence.

I think the problem lies with you rather than the gearing ? It'll be a lot cheaper for you to get used to pedalling faster.

What speeds are you doing on the flat ? Theres no way that you should be running out of gears with a 12 on the back - unless you're on the small ring at the front.

What cadence are you pedalling at when you run out ?

on the flat when the wind is behind which is quite often here i get to about 33mph and dont feel comfortable with the peddle speed. Yes ok this does not happen often but I would rather have the option of a second set of gears with my cosmic wheels for when i dont go near the mountains and just want to blast along the flat. Certainly dont need to compete not good enough for that just enjoy going fast and want to get some different gearing for when im going the right way! thanks for the info will get an 11 and try it. thanks
