help! Hit a problem with rear derailleur adjustment ...

OK, fitted new chain and cassette on specialized hardrock. Slackened off gear change cable and lined up derailleur and stop for H gear. screwed in fine adjuster on rear d/r as far as it would go and let out 1/2 turn. pulled cable taut and tightened up the nut. Then went to change up/down etc to check all smooth, and the trigger shifter will only go up one cog - and the shifter is reading about 4-5 instead of 8. slackened cable again, but still shifter in the middle numbers, won't go to 8. So, must have done something wrong! Any advice?
