Restoring my old bike, frame + other bits painted, now started putting all back with new bearings but bottom bracket, left side screwed in no problem, left hand thread but the right side was difficult to start screwing the outer race in, and after afew turns got harder - has 2 indents that I use tips of thin nose pliersto turn but getting harder and now is stuck -

? I assume must have cross-threaded it - so how best to procede - remove but then what ? new outer race, or whole set, or carry on with big hammer/screwdriver to carry on screwing in further?

Are you sure you were screwing it in the right way? If the BB shell is an English one the drive side would have screwed in counter-clockwise. If the frame has an Italian BB shell you would have had to scew it in clockwise.

get it to a bike shop and get the threads chased out.

you should not need any tools to fit a BB on a well preped frame (except for the final tightening).

Bike is an Emelle (?French by the soundsof it) bought it in 1991, left side (as sat on bike) definately screwed in counter clockwise/ left hand thread, when I startedright side I slowly turned counterclockwise, till I could feel that slight 'give' at the start of the thread, which I did - it did nto screw in that way, then normal right hand thread took but soon stuck.

was thinking maybe remove, look at the damage on the threads and ? try save it somehow, or use the Dremelwith some grinding attachment toremove outer damaged threads on shell and frame. Don't want to spend much, since the bike is only got some entimental value and was going to use it for general riding about.

get it chased. it will be worth it.

after chasing an a clean the new BB went in without tools just for tightening.

Not quite so exotic. Came into the country via Derby company Moore Large & Co, hence the EMelLe name. Probably worth less than what you've spent on the rebuild etc.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Update - gave bike to LBS, who told me that I had put the caps on the wrong way - that the adjustable one always goes on the non drive side - ! (I knew I should have taken photos of it before dismantling, novice that I am with bicycles )- and so I'd cross-threaded in the wrong direction - they have re-tapped the threads and put all back as it should be.

    So it's not French !
