Me and a few mates are heading over on Thursday. Checking the website there it days the cafe is closed until April. Is there anywhere else nearby to buy something to eat or would you be better just bringing sandwiches?

    From where?
Newton Stewart is only along the road a bit, cafes on main street.
We usually stop at the Tea Pot(?)cafe in the layby on the `75
Castle Douglas if you get ferther down the road.
Cracking new farm shop/cafe, Kilnford has opened just off the Dalbeatte/Dumfries bypass roundabout

If you're in/near Castle Douglas I *urge* you to check out the micro brewery. It's only open in the afternoon, so I recommend a Saturday morning ride somewhere local, then hit the brewery for the afternoon.
Trust me. It's well worth it.

There's even a good chance you'll see my best bud and riding chum in there (Simon). He'll gladly give you free local riding advice.
Stumpy, Rockhopper (stolen!) & custom SX Trail II - that should do it!

The Stables Tea Room is on your right just before you turn left off the A75 to go to Kirroughtree (I assume you will be travelling from Stranraer Ferry terminal).. good food but a wee bit pricey (well, to be honest it is much the same price as the Cafe at Kirroughtree would have been )

Yes we're coming from the Stranraer ferry terminal. We are only visiting for the day so unfortunately the brewery trip won't be possible. I'd rather spend the time on the bike :).

Just a heads up for you Bud.. I was down at Kirrie today and the "Stables Tea Room" was closed..apparently their opening times can be a bit hit and miss...if it is closed Thursday then I would suggest you drive through to Newton Stewart and park up in the main street.. A few cafes there to take your fancy.:wink: drive in Through Minnigaff as this will bring you out at the lower end of the Town where the cafes are
  • Mcbazza, is that the Sulwath Brewery? i'm heading up there come June and thats sounds just the right reward i can spring onto my mates after the trail.

Holy sh1111t!!!! You Scots don't know how well you've got it. What a fantastic day in ever sense - I forgot that St Patricks isn't really celebrated in Scotland. Couldn't figure why the trails were empty.

Got there about 11, got changed and then headed up the Red. Only name remember was something like "Lone Ranger" which had 2 technical climbs and the rest was flying all the way back to the car park. A bite to eat and then up to the Black (have to go up part of the Red again) no biggie.

The climb to the top was epic! "Heartbreak Hill" was mentioned which I think had me running out of gears. Then up to Moab. Disnt manage to ride it all as I had the jitters and didn't fancy falling backwards off it. On up to the top and then disaster struck. Guy with us had his chain snap and not a chain tool in site. We pedalled all the way to the top - think Black Craig was the last trail - and then we had to drag and push him back. He were raging!!

One thing I'd say though. See the markers that say what route you are on? They are fu3k all use. Would be nice if they actually said were you were so you could get home. "Escape route" also be some bu11shit. Would be nice to know how long that route is lol.

Excellent day out, would defo recommend it!!

It rook us that long to get back to base we just ate on the boat. There was a plan to go to a restaurant outside the ferry terminal but there just wasn't enough time.

I'd say we'll probably be back over again around Easter. £80 for a car and 4 people is a great offer.

The posts are numbered and if you have a map look very, very closely and you will see the said numbers on the map.
If you mail the Rangers with a suggestion that they put that info on the map they mat do so. (might be there, not looked!! )
There is a new project manager taking over the 7Stanes and sure he would be happy to here about you experience.
Should be a general mail addy on Stanes site

Cheers trailpuppet for the suggestion. After posting that someone showed me a scan they had of a trail map - I couldn't see any of these around, are they in the shop? - anyways, right nuff there is a wee number on it and I did remember seeing a number on the posts. At the transition point of red/black there was a pie chart showing you how much you had covered but would still be worthwhile noting how far it was back to base as although we all ha phones there was zero coverage eek!

I'm still recuperating now - I think my face will be sore for another few days from smiling hehe :)

Maps are usually in box on post/info point at trailhead/start or online, printable from Stanes site.

The FE guy responsible for Kirry is called Chris Ross, is a biker and it shows re the "flow" of the trail.
