Ridgeback range gets good feedback: http://www.ridgeback.co.uk/
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

My eleven year old's been well & truly spoilt. Found a brand new 2006 13" Stumpjumper Pro frame and got LBS swap everything over from my (unused) 2008 Rockhopper Comp. Then just swapped the spring in the RockShox Recon SL forks from medium to light. All in I think £210!!! 8)

...and we can probably swap some of the bits back to the 17" Rockhopper frame when he grows out of the Stumpy...

His cycling confidence has come on leaps and bounds with such a light and agile frame / decent components, so would definately recommend getting as decent a bike as possible.

I'd keep an eye out for a little adults frame. Marin even made 13.5" full sus bikes around 2000 if you want to go down that route, it's what I started on 8)

My 11 year old has an Islabike Beinn 26s which is perfect. If your son needs suspension - because he's doing trails with rocks and roots - then he might need a hardtail, but you need to be careful as there is a significant weight penalty on kids suspension bikes unless you pay serious money.

The Islabikes Bein 26s is £350 and weighs 24lbs, while their Creig 26 is £700 and 26lbs. Most small adult bikes will weigh much more, and unless you get an air fork, or a very soft spring the suspension will do very little.
