Bike written off, advice on a replacement?

Oh B*****r!

Out on a trail near Epsom Downs yesterday and my Marin nail trail was stamped on by a horse - we had hopped over a fence to let the horses past but one spooked and stamped! Riders went off giving us a mouthful and i can't trace them!

Verdict from my LBS is that the bike is dead - the very nasty dents and creases in the frame are not a pretty sight.

So, I'm in the market for a new bike and the collective wisdom of the panel is invited!

I do tracks and trails, no adrenaline junkie stuff, and the occasional off road tour like the trans Cambrian mtb route

The LBS pointed me in the direction of a Whyte 901 - which is the price point i am looking for. Reviews seem good, but what else should i be looking at?

Your bike god trampled on by horses?.... I'm sorry but as harsh as that is, it is a little funny. Deepest condolences though.

push the boat out and get a an orange crush?

Alternatively I have seen some good second hand full sus trail bikes knocking about the forums. Worth a look for that money. Could grab yourself a nice bargain trail beast.

given the choice of a Cruch or a Whyte 901, I'd go for the Whyte. Even if you held a gun to my head

Are you looking to replace just the frame or the entire bike?

Many great frames out there. Cotic, Ragley, On-One. The Whyte does get some good reviews.
Current - Cotic BFe - Pike RC - XT - Hope Arch EX
    Previous - 09 Marin Wolfridge 6.7 - 03 Kona Roast

Silly question, but have you informed the Police? Sounds like criminal damage to me and providing you weren't in the wrong you should have a reasonable case against them if they can be found. I assume they will ride the same routes again in the not too distant future, especually if it was a weekend you saw them, the chances are they will ride the same route again the next weekend.

    Just a thought.

I will be! Garmin shows the exact point the incident happened. I'm off to the plod tomorrow and will also scout the stables.

when i get it back from the LBS,

Net damage was tacoed front wheel, bent chainrings and underside of frame stove in.

I'd have been REALLY pissed off if my fresh-out-of-the-box-first-ride-Garmin 800 had been buggered!

The riders should also be insured for third party damage.

Only if they want to give you their details, unfortunately horses dont have registration plates screwed to their backsides to trace them.
