Schrader are easier and fine for MTB as pressures are low. Presta better for high pressures and skinny rims ie road bikes.

Just check that your rims can take the wider valves. Some are already drilled for Schrader and use reducers. Some can be drilled out, and some are too narrow to drill.

No idea of your specific rims. What I said was general. You could check though.

they're presta rims, well mine are and i've stuck with presta as I've got to pump a slick up to 80PSI for the commute and I've never had a valve break on me.

Schrader all the way for me, compressor to inflate in about 3 seconds = win.

It must be a pain carry a compressor with you out on the trail just so you can pump your tyres up in 3 seconds.

Prefer presta myself, easier to let air out of, don't fill with mud if you don't use valve caps, and the lock rings stop valves rattling. Personal though really innit.

    not true.

Schrader are found in higher pressure applications than Presta.

generally you will find presta valves on rims that have a narrow land between the rim sidewalls.

Right can anyone recommend some presta tubes that can take some hard riding just to keep for spares incase of a blowout.

Schwalbes. I got mine as both a performance upgrade (lower weight) and so I've got some spares.

    MAXXIS DH innertubes.
They do weight as much as the rest of the wheel combined, mind

they're definitely lighter than the originals and I don't seem to get as many punctures either. That might be me though

cooldad, I used to think that too. Until I realised I was running 250psi in my rear shock with a schraeder valve!

Schraeders are used in just about every divers gear too, usually running at ~150 psi.

OK Presta are more aerodynamic so will make you faster.

Yeah the the folklore is schaeders are no good at higher pressure, but I have them on my commuter at 85psi and over a couple of months they have only dropped 5psi, which is a whole lot better than the prestas on my road bike. I guess that , the rear shock and diving thing disprove it.

The main disadvantage for me of presta's is that they are susceptible to damage - usually user inflicted.

Roadies do actually cite that as a reason. Also, as you have no spring to work against, so you can inflate the tyre 0.26589 seconds faster.

No joke that. A chap I ride with on the road occasionally leaves the dustcaps off to save weight. He has a very expensive collection of carbon road bikes.
I have a 20 yr old Carerra Monza in steel that I got off Ebay for a fiver so I just leave the dustcaps on.

Although admittedly he leaves me for dead so maybe there’s something in it.
