Hi, used the 661's last year. No major off's but slapped through a few branches/brambles that would have left a mark a few times with no damage done. Great in the winter to stop cold legs but tend to be a bit warm during the heat of summer . Try them on before you buy to check for length. Once on however even when hot they tend to stay in place pretty well and you don't notice after the first couple of miles that you are wearing them.0

I used 661 Kyle Strait knee pads yesterday for the first time.
Very comfortable, hardly needed to adjust them, they didn't slip down, brilliant. They do only provide knee coverage though so if you really want something to properly cover your shins they might not do it....Offroad: Canyon Nerve XC8 (2012)

If you want really cheap, just get some football ones.
Other than that, chain reaction have loads of different ones, cheapest I've seen are only £12 :http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=27766XC: Giant Anthem X

MTFU and get used to it. After a few years of shin abuse, they'll become almost numb. Then the only time you realise you've done something is when you look down to change your shoes later, and find a big gouge, and gallons of blood0

this is true. On the Enduro 2 weeks ago, I felt a dribble down the front of my leg... turned out it was blood pouring from a fairly deep set of scrapes from my pedals0 -
I don't usually bother. But I do have a set of old cheap Umbro shinpads I throw on for DH races (not that I do much of that anymore). That's more for tree stumps than Pedal strikes though.0

I got in trouble for bleeding all over the carpet at the start of the year  Shinpads would have saved me a lot of pain.Uncompromising extremist0 -
I often pop round my sister's house for something to eat after being to llandegla, and get greeted with "what the hell happened to your leg?"
That's usually the first i know of it!
I dunno what causes it, since I don't slip off the pedals except on very rare occasions. I think it's just rocks thrown up from the front wheel or something.0 -

I need to wear them coz I came off beginning of feb leg swelled up to three times the size of normal then the dead blood became infected and I nearly got septerciemia and ended up with a 6" hole on my leg
So I can get back on the bike sooner I thought I would Protect it that way the misses won't give me to much greif :oops:0 -
sounds like a cheaper option would be to ditch the missus!0
