Shimano 105 5600 to 5700

Hello

I have a bike with a 105 5600 rear mech, tiagra front mech and tiagra shifters. It has a compact chain set but the tiagra shifter is desinged for 3 rings. I also have a 9 gear cassette. One of the shifters is on the blink so i want to replace the shifters and front mech with 105 5700.

Would the 5700 shifters work with the 5600 rear mech and would the cheapo tektro brakes work the same? Also, as I understand it, the 5600 rear mech and the 5700 shifters are desgined for 10 speed so would they work ok with a 9 speed cassette? I really dont need the extra gear but could change the cassette if it will all work better. Would this mean getting a new chain?

    The mechs will work OK, the brakes will be fine (the new levers have a nicer brake feel now too).
    The 10spd shifers won't work with the 9spd cassette though, you'd need a new cassette and chain. You should also change the chainrings or chainset from 9 to 10spd rings. While 10spd will work on 9spd rings, it doesn't work great and the chain will wear quickly as the wider teeth on the 9spd rings will gradually spread the chain apart.
    An option is just to look around for the older levers as a direct replacement, would work out a lot cheaper.

    10sp on 9sp rings works fine. I have been using a Dura-ace 9sp chainset and Ultegra front mech with 10sp Ultegra cassette and rear mech for 5 years or more with no trouble what so ever. It is now in use for TTs. I only changed the rear mech because I needed a new one for the winter bike so moved it on.

    Yeah, it will work OK. 11spd on 10spd isn't too great but there is more of a difference in chain width than 9 on 10. Just best to use the right rings because they are designed together - the ramps etc. will shift a little better on a matched drivetrain :)

    I have a truvativ elita crank at the moment. Can you just replace the chainrings from the ones desgined for 9 speed to ones designed for 10? Do they just screw on and off?

    Let me guess....you have Boardman Road Comp. I have done exactly what you are thinking of although I did change the cassette and chain. IMHO you will have to add a 10 spd cassette and chain. 5700 shifters have 9 clicks to move from 1-10. On the plus side you have an opportunity to grab an extra gear (lower or higher depending on your preference - you could get an 11-23 or do what I did and go the cowards way and get a 12-27! 11-28 if you are feeling partic lazy!!) and your shifters will work with an older 105 rear mech. Brakes work fine too. Front chain rings make no difference. Indexing took minutes and changing is as smooth as butter. Just blinged up mine and I am glad I did!

    Now if only I can get the temp to go above 5 deg - we'll all get well!
