Looking for advice: On One rims and Planet X hubs.

Hi, my name's Morgan, long time rider, first time poster. :D I've been recommended to Bikeradar by my riding buddy Paul, who is also a member here.

I ride a "bitsa" XC bike, hitting the woodland trails, towpaths & bridleways in my local area whenever time allows (alright, once a week in the winter, twice a week in the summer!)

Recently, my rear hub gave up, deciding it would like to freewheel in both directions. :( That was a Shimano XT hub, with a Mavic XC 717 rim.

I need to replace it, but my budget is low. Therefore, this rather cheap complete rear wheel caught my eye on Chain Reaction Cycles:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=63400

It looks like a nice enough set-up, but I've never heard of either Planet X or On One. Does anyone have any experience of their products, or any advice they'd like to dish out on whether or not I should take the plunge and buy this wheel? I'd be eternally grateful!

Just for a bit of background, I weigh 15 stone and ride a hardtail aluminium frame with V-brakes.

Any help on this topic would be great, thanks! 8)

Morgan.
My "Bitsa": 7005 Alu h/tail, Marzocchi Bomber fork, Deore LX/XT/Acera trans, front: Mavic XC 717, XT hub, rear: On One Reetard, Planet X hub, Panaracer Fire XC Pro tyres, Cane Creek S6 h/set, Club Roost bars, Xero stem, Charge Spoon saddle.

rather than replace the whole wheel, you could overhaul your current hub and replace the freewheel. would be a bit cheaper. unless you really want new wheels, in which case i cant help really :D

    oh, and welcome!

    Thanks for the welcome! :)

As for the existing hub and rim, they're both over 7 years old and have seen better days. I'm perfectly happy to scrap the whole lot for a cost-effective fully built wheel.

I'm really curious to find out what people think of Planet X and On One stuff, so if anyone has any experience, I'd be very grateful of the advice.

    Thanks again.

My son has some Planet X wheels on his road bike. Excellent wheels and very good value.
Can't comment on MTB wheels though but see no reason they wouldn't be as good.

  • With apologies for the double-post, I should have mentioned that I'll probably go for the £44.99 deal for the On One Reetard rim with Planet X hub at CRC.

That's if CRC still have them in stock, come payday!

    Thanks for the feedback, guys.

my experience was poor with on-one/planet X, so much so that when they offered me a partial refund i refused to prove a point so they knew i was distinctly unhappy,

I had a thread on it recently.

They sent me the wrong wheels, centre lock instead of IS 6 bolt. Then sent me a second set they thought was incorrect but actually was correct after 24 hours of discussing with tech guys and me having already booked the courier to return then, then failed to refund my return postage costsfor the next 4 days. The guy then ignored my mails for 3 days before it was then passed to his manager. The manager offered me a refund of postage or some parts, but i refused. Let them have the money but the knowledge they had not reached customer satisfaction

strange, I've had lots of stuff from planet x / on-one and had no issues... had lots of delay from the post office....

kinda surprised CRC have planet x stuff unless they have just shifted a load of end of line stock and CRC have build them into wheels, either way they are a bargain

Could easily be a cimple on-off mistake but didn't sit well with me. Started off well with 3 replies to email within a few hours, then blokey simply stopped responding, it then got passed to someone else who responded within 20 mins then stoppped again until the manager type guy phoned me 2 days later.

Was your problem just with their customer service or did you have a problem with the products themselves?

Morgan is looking at buying from CRC so not an issue if just customer service.

MY problem was with their customer service. The product was a pair of DT Swiss wheels which i can't grumble with.

Chill mate I was only messing. You bought DT Swiss Wheels from OnOne/PlanetX and had a delivery problem. Morgan is buying an OnOne/PlanetX wheel from Chain Reaction, don't you see the difference?

I have MTB Planet X superlite wheels on my 29er, great wheels and roll really well.

    Now for sale Fatty
  • Now now children, don't fight! :P Certainly not over the merits of a £45 wheel, anyway!

Thanks for the input, Weeksy... And Paul, stop winding people up!

Bummer that you had supply/service issues with On-One/Planet X, but as has been established, I'm looking to buy from CRC, with whom I am pleased to say I have a long and happy purchase history.

Now then, at risk of starting a riot, does anyone have any direct experience of using either Planet X off-road hubs, or On-One's 26" Reetard rims?

I'd quite like to know how they stand up to a bit of XC abuse.
My "Bitsa": 7005 Alu h/tail, Marzocchi Bomber fork, Deore LX/XT/Acera trans, front: Mavic XC 717, XT hub, rear: On One Reetard, Planet X hub, Panaracer Fire XC Pro tyres, Cane Creek S6 h/set, Club Roost bars, Xero stem, Charge Spoon saddle.
  • just to throw a spaner in the works why not spend the money on new shimarno hubsor even blow the budget on some hopes have them laced into your old rims for now then when yo can afford them buy some new mavic rims
7 years i think says it all
mavic in my expeciance are the best rims

It's an interesting idea, and one I have considered.

However, having looked at the prices of mid-range hubs (£30 - £60), then add to that the cost of having the hub fitted to my existing rim/spokes and trued-up by a bike shop (£20 - £30 at a guess), the £45 option of a fully built wheel looks pretty attractive.

Plus, my existing rear wheel rim is pretty battered, and half the spokes are loose, so who knows how bent it all is! Truth is I'm ready to cut the old wheel loose and stick a new one on the bike.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway. 8)

PS: As it happens, I am currently riding with a Mavic XC 717 rim and a blue anodised Hope hub on the back, lent to me by PaulBox (hence his earlier reference to his GT "hack" missing a back wheel!)

    Cheers guys. :D

I would imagine that the overall quality of On-One's products would be the same whether in 29 or 26 inch format, so that's good.

Right, time to take stock. So far in this thread, we've established that On-One rims are pretty good... Anyone have any experience of the Planet X off-road hubs they'd like to share?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for CRC's £45 wheel, but it would still be great to hear from anyone who's ridden XC with Planet X hubs.

Thanks for all the replies so far, people. 8)

EDIT: Sounds like VWsurfbum has Planet X hubs - care to elaborate on your experiences, dude? ;)

If you can raise your budget a bit you can get a decent hand built wheel from Merlin.

Funnily enough, Merlin were the first people I looked at... Sadly too rich for my blood.

Plus, if I'm totally honest, I really don't hit the trails hard enough or often enough to warrant spending lots of cash on wheels.

As long as they're not going to buckle after a few light jumps and bunny hops, can take my weight (about 15 stone on a good day) and will last 5 years+ (I only ride once or twice a week), then I'm a happy chappie.

From what I've read on this thread so far, it looks like the low-cost option from CRC will see me right.
