Im trying to decide which garmin edge gps device to buy and cant decide between the 705 or 800. Can anyone offer advice?
As far as i can see the 705 is near enough the same as the 800 with training aids just a difference in graphics. Touch screen doesnt bother me in the slightest.
I will always plan routes on my computer rather than on the gps so would OS mapping benifit? If i had the basic 705 would the routes that i download from the likes of MRB look ok on the screen, same goes for googlemaps etc for the ones i design?
I simply want a device that is good for training and to be able to download routes from other riders or ones i have made with out problems and be able to follow the directions easy.
The basic 705 is £220 but the 800 trail bundle is £359.99. Big difference in price and dont want to pay for something that may be a bit of an over kill.
Your advice is my appreciated

If you don't need mapping on the device then an Edge 500 is worth checking out.
You can upload courses to it and follow the breadcrumb trail - works greatSpecialized Enduro SL Pro Carbon

Hi,
I've got the 705and it works a treat, however It came with the Topo maps which are NOT OS level so plotting a route on the computer using them is difficult. However I get around this buy using MemoryMaps on the computer and uploading to the device, this give you turn by turn mapping when out and about. I've not tried any routes from other sites like google but I belive if it's in a GPS file format it works fine.
The only thing you need to do is make sure you load the detailed maps onto the GPS to get the turn by turn function. The other functions it offes are also great, like ride tracking, heart rate etc.0 -
After some searching have found a big fault with the 800. Seems alot of customers are having to return there unit to garmin for exchange due to screen cracking  This isnt just one or two people its +30 in the uk alone!! let alone other countries. Garmin now send you back a reconditioned unit, one thats been fixed and not a new one at that. Even the units they send back still have the same problem.
It seems that if the unit gets any grit or dirt at the side of the glass and you try clean it out, the glass cracks!!

Think the 705 wins this one or even the Bryton Rider 50 is worth a punt over the 800.http://www.mudsweatgears.co.uk

That link is about someone who sat on his 800 in his back pocket with keys in the pocket (now wonder the screen cracked). Can you post a link to some of the threads about the problem you raised (screens cracking due to dirt down the side)?
