Home servicing my Toras... failed at first hurdle!

I can't get the lower legs off!

I know, I know - I've got the service guide in front of me. Searched the forums, they all say this is an easy job. I just need a little more than:
Using a 5mm hex wrench, loosen both shaft bolts 3 to 4
turns (fig. 3a).
With hex wrench in shaft bolt, tap each bolt free with
plastic mallet. Using your fingers, remove both shaft
bolts completely (fig. 3b).
Using your fingers, remove shaft bolts from both
threaded shaft ends (fig. 3c).

Now I've got both bolts out, they didn't need whacking -- am I whacking them with a mallet to get them out, or to loosen something on the other side? The next step is 'pull the legs off', and they're not budging.

For reference these are coil-sprung Tora S-lite (SL) 2009 model year.

Any suggestions not involving sending them to TF?

Thanks! :?

unscrew the bolts from tight, about 5 mm, then hold the leg, and tap the bolt

thats what i did, dont have to hit hard

theres a rod in both legs, that are held tightly where the hole is, tapping the bolts, releases the rod, lowers then can be released

As above - the rods tend to seat themselves and a sharp tap on the unscrewed bolt does the trick ...
wait `til you try marzocchis

You slacken the nuts and tap them in order to free the upper from the lower. The tapping isn't to remove the nuts its put force on the uppers to free them. Put the bolts/nuts back in a few turns and tap until they go flush. Then undo them, then pull the lowers off.

Thanks all -- just what I needed. Whack it harder!

pdid - never even thought to youtube it.

Still, finished the service last night. Was rather a messy and unsuccessful process; I was servicing the things to try and sort out a failed lockout/loss of damping. I basically did a clean, inspect, oil change - everything went back together perfectly.

Problem is, it's not fixed anything. No lockout, no discernible rebound damping (though I still hear the 'whoosh' sound when rebound is dialed on).

Service guide from 2006 - which doesn't mention the SL directly - says of oil amounts:
    130ml+/-5ml upper left (5wt),
    15ml lower left (15wt),
    30ml lower right (15wt).

Now I've replaced these using an oil syringe, so the numbers are right. Any ideas?

are you sure you serviced the damper and not just the lube oil?
