I bought a 2nd hand set of pedals. The springs have sand in them and the top stainless steel sections have a bit of surface rust on them.
I haven't tried using them on the bike yet... how do I know if the springs are working nicely?

I've sprayed the springs with WD40 in the mean time to try get the sand out.

I was going to try undo the screws that go through the springs, but they're super tight, and I'd rather not mess with them without some expert advice :)
Once they're working nicely, can you just spray some chain wax on them?

  • I wouldn't worry too much about the sand, there's not a lot to go wrong with a basic spd.
Don't take the bolts out of the springs either, it's not worth the agro. If the metal arch in the top left of your picture is in the position shown, then the springs are working fine, although you can adjust the tension with the allen bolt.
