SRAM X5 Shifters Opinions?

I've got SRAM X5 shifters (front and back)
The front one is cracked apart and I got it working by wrapping steel
wire around it. It doesn't indicate gear, but 'works'.
If you don't already know...
SRAM X5 operates like this:
* light push on small lever with thumb
* hard push on big lever with thumb
While it is a very clever idea. (4 fingers on the handlebars, index
finger on the brake, and thumb can change gears)
It somehow sucks.
I find it requires a lot of force to change gears.
Something about it is just crap. I don't know if its just because its
damaged.
I also don't like the rear shifter...
Maybe its the angle of the shifters, the tension of the derailleur
springs or not being used to it (only done about 1hr on new bike so far).
Or maybe SRAM X5 is just a crappy shifter?
Anyone else have experience with X5 shifters?
I went for a little ride today on some hard tail bike, which has the
same style rapid-fire gears as my old bike:
* light pull on small lever with index finger
* hard push on big lever with thumb
And they're an absolute pleasure to use!
So either I'm just not used to the X5, something else is not set up properly or they're crap.
If they're crap I should take this opportunity to buy a DIFFERENT front
shifter.
But if its just a case of not being used to the X5, then I'll get
another X5, because I think shifting up & down with your thumb is genius.
One other thing I can try is lubricate all the cable housings, the previous owner used to ride this bike through serious dust and mud.
What say you?

The problem lies with your cables I think. Replace or clean them.0

okay, I'll replace the cable housings before replacing the shifter, and see how it goes
Can you just wipe the cable with a wet cloth and then let it dry?
How should you lubricate the cable before reinserting it?0 -
A thin layer of chain oil on the cable works well. Wipe off excess. Also ensure the outer cables are cut flush, aren't pinched, and the caps fit properly.0
